UPS Ground vs 2nd Day Air vs Next Day Air
How UPS's domestic services compare on speed and cost, what surcharges to expect, and where to drop off your packages.
On this page
Octoship gives you discounted access to UPS's domestic services alongside USPS, FedEx and DHL Express, so you can compare every option in one list. UPS tends to shine for heavier packages (5 lb and up), larger boxes and business deliveries. Here's how the main services stack up.
Service comparison
| Service | Typical delivery | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| UPS Ground | 1–5 business days | Heavy or bulky packages, cost-sensitive orders |
| UPS 3 Day Select | 3 business days | A guaranteed date without air prices |
| UPS 2nd Day Air | 2 business days | Fast delivery at a mid-range price |
| UPS Next Day Air Saver | Next business day, end of day | Urgent orders, cheaper than early AM |
| UPS Next Day Air | Next business day, by late morning | Truly urgent shipments |
UPS Ground
UPS Ground is the workhorse. It's day-definite (you'll see the expected delivery date when you buy), it handles packages up to 150 lb, and for anything heavier than a few pounds it often beats USPS on price. Ground transit time maps cover the continental US in 1–5 business days.
Air services
2nd Day Air and Next Day Air are guaranteed services, so if UPS misses the commitment you may be eligible for a refund of the shipping charges (subject to UPS terms, and suspended during some peak periods). They're priced well above Ground, so most sellers save them for customers who explicitly pay for expedited shipping.
Surcharges to know about
- Residential surcharge — added for deliveries to homes. Octoship detects residential addresses and includes this in the rate you see.
- Delivery area surcharge — for some rural and remote ZIP codes.
- Additional handling — packages over 50 lb, with a longest side over 48 inches, or not fully encased in cardboard.
- Large package — length plus girth over 130 inches.
- Address correction — charged if the driver has to fix an incorrect address. See address verification.
Getting your package to UPS
- 1Print and attach the label
UPS labels print at 4×6 on a thermal printer or on letter paper. Attach it to the largest flat side and cover any old barcodes.
- 2Choose a drop-off spot
Take it to any The UPS Store, UPS Customer Center, or UPS Access Point location (many pharmacies and convenience stores). Drop boxes accept smaller prepaid packages.
- 3Or schedule a pickup
Prefer to stay put? Schedule a pickup in Octoship — see scheduling UPS pickups.
- 4Watch the first scan
Tracking will update to "Origin scan" or "Drop-off" once UPS has it. If you got a receipt at drop-off, keep it until that scan shows up.
ScreenshotUPS or USPS?
There's no single answer, which is why Octoship shows every carrier — USPS, UPS, FedEx and DHL Express — in the same list. As a rough guide, USPS is usually cheaper for packages under 2–3 lb and for PO Box or military addresses (UPS can't deliver to those). UPS often wins for heavier packages, larger boxes and deliveries to businesses, where there's no residential surcharge.
- Under 1 lb: USPS Ground Advantage almost every time.
- 1–5 lb: compare — it depends heavily on zone and box size.
- 5 lb and up, or big boxes: UPS Ground is often the best value.
- PO Boxes, APO/FPO/DPO: USPS only.
FedEx is a close rival to UPS on all of these — always compare the two side by side. For the full four-carrier picture, see choosing between USPS, UPS, FedEx and DHL Express.
