Understanding UPS adjustments
UPS audits packages and may charge extra if the details on the label don't match. Here's why it happens and how to dispute one.
On this page
UPS measures and weighs packages in its facilities. If the actual weight, dimensions or address differ from what was entered when the label was bought, UPS bills the difference. These charges usually appear 1–3 weeks after shipping and are deducted from your Octoship balance.
Common causes
- Weight or dimensions entered lower than actual
- Residential address shipped as commercial
- Address corrections
- Additional handling for packages not in cardboard
Disputing an adjustment
Open the shipment, click View adjustment to see UPS's recorded measurements, then click Dispute. Add a photo of the package on a scale and next to a tape measure if you have one. Disputes must be filed within 60 days of the adjustment.
