How Octoship Insurance works with every carrier
One policy for USPS, UPS, FedEx, DHL Express and our international postal carriers — what's covered, how premiums are priced, and how international claims differ.
With 550+ services across USPS, UPS, FedEx, DHL Express and postal carriers like Canada Post, Royal Mail and Australia Post, every carrier's built-in coverage is different. Octoship Insurance smooths that out: the same coverage, the same claims process and the same in-app dashboard, no matter who carries the box.
What's the same everywhere
- Coverage for loss and damage while the package is in the carrier's hands, up to the value you choose.
- One claims process. Every claim is filed in Octoship, not with the carrier — see how to file an insurance claim.
- Shipping cost reimbursed on approved loss claims.
- Auto-insure rules that can match on order value, destination country or carrier.
How premiums are priced
| Shipment | Typical premium | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Domestic, any carrier | A small percentage of the insured value | Shown next to each rate before you buy |
| International, courier (UPS, FedEx, DHL Express) | Slightly higher than domestic | End-to-end tracking keeps premiums low |
| International, postal | Higher for some destinations | A few destinations can't be insured — the option is hidden |
International claims
International packages take longer to declare lost — you can file 30 days after the ship date, and you have 90 days in total. Customs holds don't count as loss: if a package is stuck at customs, sort out the duties or paperwork first (see DDP vs DDU). Packages seized because of restricted contents or incorrect customs declarations aren't covered.
