Included carrier coverage vs Octoship Insurance
Some services include up to $100 of coverage. Here's when that's enough and when to add more.
Several services come with built-in coverage at no extra cost. Many USPS Priority Mail, Priority Mail Express and Ground Advantage labels include up to $100, and UPS and FedEx include up to $100 of declared value on most domestic packages. International courier services like DHL Express usually include only limited liability, often calculated by weight rather than value — so a light, pricey item may be covered for far less than it's worth.
| Included carrier coverage | Octoship Insurance | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Free with eligible services | Small premium per label |
| Coverage limit | Typically up to $100 (often less internationally) | Up to the value you choose |
| Carriers | Varies by carrier and service | Every carrier and service in Octoship |
| Claims filed with | The carrier | Octoship's claims team, in-app |
| Lost-package filing window | Carrier's own rules | See our claims guide |
If your item is worth $100 or less and ships with an included-coverage service, you're already protected. For anything pricier, add Octoship Insurance for the full value — the two don't stack, so insure for the total value rather than the amount above $100.
