Export compliance and EEI filing over $2,500

When a shipment needs Electronic Export Information, and how to add the ITN to your customs form.

Updated 1 min read

US export regulations generally require Electronic Export Information (EEI) to be filed through the Automated Export System (AES) when any single commodity in a shipment — grouped by Schedule B or HS code — is valued over $2,500, or when the item requires an export license regardless of value.

  1. 1
    File through AESDirect

Create a free account with the Census Bureau's AESDirect system and file your EEI before the package ships.

  2. 2
    Copy your ITN

AES returns an Internal Transaction Number (ITN) that looks like X20261028123456.

  3. 3
    Enter it in Octoship

On the customs form, choose EEI filed and paste the ITN. Octoship prints it on the customs declaration.

Shipments below the threshold use an exemption code instead, which Octoship fills in automatically. Some destinations and commodities have stricter rules, so check before shipping anything controlled or unusually valuable. For the rest of the customs form, see how to fill out a customs form.
